Open mat class is unstructured yet very effective. It’s an opportunity for a student to invest extra time on the mat outside of their weekly training. During this time students are open to work on anything they choose too. It’s a great time to ask questions and invest time into your self and fellow team mates. Most students use this time to drill new techniques hundreds, sometimes thousands of times to master it. There’s not enough time in a regular class to repeat a move thousands of times. The purpose of repetition is to record the movements in your muscle memory. That way, your body reacts before thinking.Open Mat is a great time for sparring. This friendly competition between fellow team mates is important so that you get use to attacking and defending against different body types and styles. Sparring allows you to apply newer techniques and sharpen older techniques during live training. The more you spar the faster you will be able to develop your own style of Martial Art.
